Eating Disorder Care
Eating disorders can be sneaky.
They don’t show up with a neon sign saying, “Hey, I’m here to ruin your relationship with food and self-worth!” Instead, they creep in quietly—sometimes disguised as “just being healthy” or “having strong willpower.” But the truth is, eating disorders are serious mental health conditions that affect people of all ages, genders, and backgrounds. According to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA), nearly 30 million Americans will struggle with an eating disorder in their lifetime. And yet, these disorders remain widely misunderstood, often hiding in plain sight behind diet culture and societal pressures.
So, how can we do better?
First, by recognizing the warning signs—dramatic weight changes, excessive focus on food, exercise, or body image, avoiding meals, or even seeming “fine” but struggling internally. If you notice these in yourself or a loved one, it’s okay to ask for help. Whether it's reaching out to a friend, a therapist, or calling a helpline, the first step is speaking up. Recovery isn’t about willpower—it’s about support, compassion, and unlearning harmful beliefs. This National Eating Disorders Awareness Week, let’s ditch the shame and open up the conversation. Because healing happens when we stop suffering in silence.
If you or someone you love is struggling with an eating disorder, know that you are not alone, and help is available.
